Vattenfall plugs in pilot 5-MW UK solar farm
March 31 – Swedish state-owned utility Vattenfall said today its 4.99-MW Parc Cynog solar farm in Carmarthenshire, Wales has started exporting power to the grid.
This is Vattenfall’s first large-scale solar installation and a pilot project for the company’s idea to colocate solar with wind at its UK sites.
The solar farm is situated at the 11-turbine Parc Cynog wind farm and uses the existing connection to the grid. Vattenfall says that wind and solar complement one another as they tend to generate power at different times.
The solar array consists of 18,860 panels and is expected to produce enough power for over 1,400 local households. The site will continue to be used for sheep grazing, the company said. Construction started at the end of January following the granting of planning permission in November 2015.
