Washington utilities get USD 12.6m of grid modernisation grants

August 19 – Washington governor Jay Inslee this week announced USD 12.6 million (EUR 11.5m) in grants to five utilities in the state for grid modernisation.
“With these awards, our leading utilities will demonstrate how to integrate battery storage with solar energy and stand-alone energy systems, train the workforce to build and maintain these systems, and lead the industry into the clean energy future,” Inslee said.
The Clean Energy Fund grants will support projects of Avista, Seattle City Light, Orcas Power and Light, Snohomish County Public Utility District and Energy Northwest. The state funding will be matched by the utilities and their partners at a ratio of at least one to one.
Snohomish Public Utility District, for instance, plans to demonstrate how to use batteries in cars to store and use renewable energy. It will combine battery storage, microgrid and solar, and will connect this integrated technology to the electric vehicle fleet. Seattle City Light will create a solar-powered microgrid at a designated emergency shelter. Avista, meanwhile, will demonstrate a “shared energy economy” model, where different assets, including solar panels, battery storage and traditional utility assets can be shared for applications such as system efficiency and grid resiliency.
