Trina CEO gears for tight supply of high-efficiency PV equipment – report

March 29 – Whilst there is an oversupply of crystalline silicon cells and modules globally, high-efficiency production lines are becoming unable to satisfy growing demand, DigiTimes reports, citing Jifan Gao — the chairman and CEO of China’s Trina Solar Ltd (NYSE:TSL).
Only half of the photovoltaic (PV) equipment manufacturing capacity worldwide is fit to make high-efficiency solar cells and panels, the company official was quoted as saying during the Boao Forum for Asia 2016 conference in China last week. Therefore, in order to respond to the needs of the industry, global PV producers ought to eliminate less efficient production lines while boosting the efficiency of their production, according to Gao.
In five years time, global solar module production capacity is expected to reach 80 GWp. In turn, each of solar cells and solar-grade crystalline silicon wafers may increase to 60 GWp-70 GWp, according to the report.
On the financial side, falling PV equipment prices have driven down both installation and generation costs for solar power. For instance, solar electricity has already achieved grid parity in western China and is expected to continue falling by as much as 50% from current rates by 2020, Trina Solar’s CEO calculates.
