Sunrun meets with Nevada governor drops legal case

May 25 – US residential solar company Sunrun Inc (NASDAQ:RUN) has abandoned a suit against Nevada governor Brian Sandoval as it looks to play a role in the local market.

The company closed its operations in Nevada at the start of 2016 after Nevada’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC) adopted new rules for net metering. It was not the only installer to do so.

This Tuesday, Sunrun’s chief executive and co-founder, Lynn Jurich, met with Sandoval “to discuss the role that Sunrun would like to have in Nevada’s renewable and sustainable clean energy future,” the company head said in a statement.

She expressed the company’s continued disappointment with the PUC’s decision to end net metering and refusal to grandfather existing solar customers.

“I welcome Governor Sandoval’s offer to have an open dialogue about the importance of bringing residential rooftop solar back to Nevada and look forward to working with the New Energy Industry Task Force about the role residential rooftop solar industry can and should play in Nevada’s clean energy future,” Jurich also said.

Sunrun was suing the governor for failing to provide text messages as part of a public records request. It had said these would show utility NV Energy’s influence in his office. The parties have now agreed to dismiss the case, local media reported.

Meanwhile, a new study this week says that Nevada’s 257 MW of solar capacity under net metering brings annual benefits of up to USD 14 million (EUR 12.6m) for all utility customers and this has to be taken into account in the ratemaking process. US firm SolarCity (NASDAQ:SCTY) and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) released the peer-reviewed paper “Distributed Energy Resources in Nevada”, which evaluates the benefit variables left unassessed in the Nevada PUC’s analysis.
