sPower breaks ground on 22.5-MW solar project in California

May 27 – US renewable energy provider sPower said on Tuesday it has started construction of a 22.5-MW solar project in California.

Located in Lancaster, Los Angeles County, the Sierra solar facility will consist of more than 250,000 First Solar photovoltaic (PV) modules installed in a fixed ground mount array. The plant is scheduled to be brought online in September 2015. Once operational, it is expected to produce enough power to meet the demand of more than 2,500 homes and offset an estimated 28,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year.

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the project has been awarded to Rosendin Electric. The electricity generated will be sold to Southern California Edison (SCE) under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

Based in Salt Lake City, sPower is a portfolio company of investment fund Fir Tree Partners.
