Sonnenbatterie targets US storage market with new R&D facility

June 10 – German smart energy storage systems company Sonnenbatterie GmbH has set up a research and development (R&D) facility in Atlanta, Georgia in a move to compete with Tesla in the US.

The facility will employ 12 to 15 engineers who will develop new smart energy storage devices for the US residential and commercial markets, expanding the company’s current portfolio, according to a press release on Wednesday.

“Our new Atlanta R&D facility gives us a unique platform to stay close to our American customers and partners, and deliver to them custom tailored products that are best suited for the US market,” said Sonnenbatterie USA chief executive Boris von Bormann.

The German company, which started operations in the US last year, will use the R&D centre for product development, prototyping and testing for the US market.

Sonnenbatterie recently agreed a partnership with Sungevity that will see the US solar company offer Sonnenbatterie’s systems to its customers in the US and Europe. The partnership was announced a day before Tesla launched its batteries for homes, businesses and utilities at the end of April.

Sonnenbatterie says it has sold more than 8,000 storage systems since entering the market in 2011. It noted that the electricity storage market had experienced dramatic growth in recent years and was forecast to expand by 250% to a capacity of 220 MW in 2015.
