December 4 – Japanese giant Sharp Corp (TYO:6753) announced today it had started commercial operation of a 2.3-MW solar plant on Hokkaido on November 30.
The capacity is given in direct current (DC).
Based in Urahoro city, the Sharp Urahoro Solar Power Plant is a joint venture with Fuyo General Lease Co Ltd (TYO:8424) through a special purpose company dubbed Crystal Clear Energy. The plant can generate some 2.9 million kWh per year, equivalent to the annual demand of 805 local households.
Sharp has also began operations on two other solar plants, both through its joint venture with Fuyo. Based in Fukushima Prefecture, the 2.62-MW Sharp Kawauchi Photovoltaic (PV) Plant was switched on in October while the 2.4-MW Sharp Inabe Nyuukawa PV Power Plant, located in Mie Prefecture, started power supply in September.
Japan aims to add 28 GW of solar capacity by 2020.
