Kyocera breaks ground on 14 MW floating PV system

January 21 – Japan’s Kyocera Corp (TYO:6971) announced today it had started construction works for a 13.7-MW floating solar system at Chiba Prefecture.

The Chiba Yamakura Water Mega Solar Power Plant, as it is named, is being implemented in a joint venture with Century Tokyo Leasing Corp (TYO:8439) and managed through Kyocera TCL Solar LLC.

Scheduled to start commercial operation in 2017, the solar system will have an estimated annual output of more than 16.17 million kWh. According to the firm’s estimates, this solar park will be able to meet the annual consumption of some 4,870 local homes.

With 50,904 of Kyocera’s 270-W solar modules, this is Kyocera’s, as well as the world’s, largest floating solar power plant, the company said.

Local utility Tokyo Electric Power  Co Inc will be purchasing the output.

In December, Kyocera and Century Tokyo completed a 9.9-MW photovoltaic (PV) plant in the western parts of Honshu island.
