India’s J&K state wants to harness 111-GW solar potential –

February 27 – The governor of Jammu & Kashmir wants all hurdles to the development of solar projects in the Indian state to be removed urgently so that it can harness the estimated 111-GW solar potential of the Ladakh region.

A senior official said so, as quoted by the Press Trust of India, adding that governor NN Vohra has directed the chief secretary to hold an urgent meeting with all stakeholders to review all existing hurdles. The central government and Jammu & Kashmir have already entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with regard to the development of a 2.5-GW solar project in Kargil and a 5-GW scheme in Leh, Ladakh.

The government representative also mentioned that the majority of the power produced by these solar power stations will be fed into the Northern Grid via the Leh-Srinagar power transmission system that is currently under construction.

The Indian government aims to install 100 GW of solar capacity by 2022.
