Chile wants to develop solar power components

June 22 – The solar power segment is an opportunity for Chile to adapt technology and develop national components, the state’s energy innovation centre Cifes said Friday, quoting local experts.
The country should be able to encourage the development of a solar industry that will help improve the productivity and diversification of the economy, Juan Rada from Chilean industrial development agency CORFO said. An expected decrease in the cost of solar energy in the next 10 years will facilitate these efforts, he added.
Rada, who manages a special programme on the matter, forecast that Chile’s installed photovoltaic capacity may surpass 900 MW at the end of 2015 in line with the expansion in the segment since 2014. Currently, there is over 1,900 MW of photovoltaic and concentrated solar power (CSP) projects at the stage of construction.
