Brazil to have 1 GW of solar power by 2017 – report

June 19 – By 2017 Brazil will add 37 new photovoltaic (PV) plants to its portfolio, reaching 1,018.21 MW of installed capacity, Brasil 247 reported Thursday, citing data by Energia Mapeada.

In comparison with other countries the number is still small, but the sector is growing very rapidly and tends to be increasingly strong in the country. At the moment, Brazil has 15.18 MW of solar power in operation, but with the fall in solar panel prices this source of energy generation becomes more competitive.

The table below shows the top 5 states in solar power generation by 2017.

This year alone, two solar energy auctions will be held, in August 28 and November 13. The first one currently has registered 382 projects with a combined capacity of 12,528 MWp. The Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (Absolar) expects the sum of these two auctions to surpass 1 GW.
