World installs 14 GW of utility-scale PV capacity in 2014 a new record
March 5 – The installed utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) power capacity globally grew by the record 14.2 GW in 2014, Wiki-Solar said today and guided for “consistent longer-term growth” in the US, China and India.
The world has reached a total utility-scale solar capacity of at least 35.9 GW. The 2014 installations almost doubled the previous record of 7.4 GW for 2013 as every continent increased its volume year-over-year, even Europe.
The table below shows the top 10 markets in terms of cumulative utility-scale solar capacity.
This ranking will change as early as this month. Wiki-Solar founder Philip Wolfe expects the UK to leapfrog India, and probably Germany too, and become the world’s third or fourth largest market. Developers in the country are rushing to complete projects larger than 5 MW before April 1, as new regulations come into force.
Wolfe noted that there is hope for countries like Chile, Japan and Canada to become sustainable markets for the solar industry.
