Wacker opens Tennessee polysilicon plant
April 18 – Germany’s Wacker Chemie AG (ETR:WCH) today officially cut the ribbon on its USD-2.5-billion (EUR 2.2bn) polysilicon factory in Charleston, Tennessee.
The company commenced starting up different sections of the plant in December and expects to reach its full capacity of more than 20,000 tonnes per year in the third quarter of 2016. The factory, which took just under five years to build, already employs about 600 people and will have staff of some 650 once fully operational.
According to Wacker’s chief executive Rudolf Staudigl, the photovoltaics’ (PV) continued progress around the world is creating growth opportunities. “Cost for electricity produced by photovoltaic systems has declined markedly in recent years. Consequently, this way of generating energy has become even more competitive, which is opening up new markets,” said Staudigl.
