US Symbion Power to develop renewable plants in Madagascar
July 24 – US power infrastructure installer Symbion Power LLC said today it signed an agreement with the Madagascar government to develop biomass and solar power plants in the country.
Symbion will be partnering with local investor Vision Madagascar (ViMa) to create a company called Symbion Madagascar. The latter will develop power plants using biomass, solar and heavy fuel oil as feedstock.
Renewables developments will comprise a 10-MW solar power plant, as well as one 5-MW biomass plant in the city of Mahajanga. Additional biomass plants will be built at strategic sites on the east coast. The total capacity of the projects, including a 116-MW heavy fuel oil plant in Tsimiroro region, will be 180 MW.
Madagascar aims to boost its economic growth by building more efficient and cost effective electrical energy solutions.
The US company has operations in a number of African countries including Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.
