November 24 – Six US-Israeli projects involving clean energy technologies, such as floating photovoltaics (PV), will receive USD 5.1 million (EUR 4.8m) in funding from the US Department of Energy (DOE) and Israel’s energy ministry (MIEW), it was announced Monday.
The money comes under the Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Energy programme. For seven years, the initiative has approved 28 projects with a total investment of about USD 22 million.
Under the seventh annual selection of BIRD Energy projects, Haogenplast Ltd of Israel and Arizona-based Global Solar Energy Inc will get USD 900,000 to develop floating PV technology systems to reduce the cost of solar energy production over water reservoirs. Israeli firm Solaris Synergy and Pristine Sun LLC from California will also receive USD 900,000 for work on a utility-scale, low-cost floating PV system for deployment on water.
The list of awardees also include 3GSOLAR of Jerusalem and and Arkema from Pennsylvania. They have secured USD 900,000 from the BIRD programme to develop thin and flexible printed solar PV for wireless electronics. Israel’s Ayyeka Technologies and Michigan-based UIS Holdings Inc will get USD 1 million to develop smart grid solutions for industrial and commercial buildings in a bid to improve energy performance through remote metering and efficiency analytics.
For their light detection and ranging, or LiDAR, technology that would use lasers and software tools and controls to boost wind power output, Pentalum Technologies and Texas Tech University receive USD 900,000 too. Yissum – The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Applied Biomathematics Inc of New York have secured USD 500,000 to develop software to better assess the impact of wind turbines on avian species.
