UK utility-scale solar to be frozen till 2019 some hope in self consumption
May 13 – Following the sharp cut in support for solar in the UK, the utility-scale segment will be frozen until 2019 but there is some hope for the residential and commercial sectors, GTM Research says.
The country has reached 9 GW of solar power capacity, achieving a compound annual growth rate of 72% since 2006. This was made possible by the feed-in tariff (FiT) and Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC) programmes and the high retail prices for grid electricity.
This year, solar companies will be busy completing projects that qualify for ROCs, but growth after that will fall significantly.
Longer-term, self consumption could revitalise the market, GTM says. Its Global Solar Demand Monitor report shows installers in the UK are looking at self-consumption as an alternative to FiTs, especially as this model is growing more and more attractive as storage costs continue to fall.
