UK FiT cuts could lead to up to 18700 solar job losses govt estimates

December 18 – Between 9,700 and 18,700 solar jobs could be lost in the UK as a result of the changes in the feed-in tariff (FiT) scheme announced on Thursday, the government has estimated in its own impact assessment of the measures.
The figures are calculated on a headcount basis and compare to a total of about 32,300 solar jobs assumed to be currently supported by the FiT scheme. On full-time equivalent basis between 4,500 and 8,700 job losses are expected out of a total of around 15,100.
Headcount employment figures include people that work part-time in the sector and are therefore higher than on full-time equivalent basis.
Jobs will be cut as the reduced FiTs and introduced caps lead to lower deployment of solar. The government says that deployment of domestic rooftop solar, for example, is expected to be around 50% of the current monthly average of around 10,000 installations over the next FiTs review period.
The impact assessment also shows that — in a medium scenario — average household electricity bills will be GBP 5 (USD 7.4/EUR 6.9) lower, or 0.9%, in 2020 as a result of the FiT changes.
(GBP 1.0 = USD 1.490/EUR 1.377)
