Trina takes over 200-MW PV cell factory in Netherlands

February 23 – Chinese solar products maker Trina Solar Ltd (NYSE:TSL) said Tuesday it has taken full control of a 200-MW photovoltaic (PV) cell factory in the Netherlands along with all other assets of bankrupt Dutch sector player Solland Solar.
The acquired business was declared bankrupt by the Limburg court in August last year, after it found itself unable to meet financial obligations to its employees. This happened just a month after former parent Pufin Power BV said it would supply more than 200 MWp of polycrystalline silicon solar cells made by Solland to Trina.
In addition to the plant in Heerlen, the scope of the deal covers all of Solland Solar’s manufacturing machines, equipment, stocks, office inventory and real estate among other assets, according to a press statement.
“[T]his new cell facility in Europe, along with our in-house manufacturing capacity in Thailand and other overseas capacities allows us to leverage our global resources so that we can further expand our presence and enhance our competitive edge in overseas markets, especially the US and Europe,” chairman and CEO, Jifan Gao, noted. Trina Solar will kick off operations at the facility in the coming weeks.
