November 15 – French oil and gas giant Total SA (EPA:FP) intends to invest about USD 300 million (EUR 279m) to equip 5,000 of its service stations around the world with solar panels within five years.
Through this programme, Total expects to install about 200 MW of solar power capacity, which is equivalent to the amount of electricity used to power a city of 200,000 people, it said in a statement on Tuesday.
“It [the programme] will reduce our carbon emissions by 100,000 tons per year and cut our electricity bill by USD 40 million per year,” said Philippe Sauquet, president of Gas, Renewables & Power at Total.
California-based SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ:SPWR), in which Total has a majority stake, will be the supplier of the solar panels for the project, Sauquet added.
