May 5 – Mexican water management authorities are proposing a project for construction of a solar park in the Mexicali Valley to guarantee lower electricity costs for irrigation, daily El Sol de Toluca said on Sunday, quoting local officials.
Regional authorities have completed technical studies and are procuring funds from the central government to go ahead with the project, which comes in response to concerns of irrigation operators.
Both the use of solar energy and a new mechanised gravity system are expected to produce substantial results, Noe Rivera, administrative basin director for the Baja California peninsula, said. He noted that irrigation tariffs in the Imperial Valley in US Southern California have been reduced by 30%-50%.
