THE FRIDAY NOTE Sweden eyes fossil fuel-free future and more top picks

September 25 – Sweden took steps to become one of the first fossil fuel-free countries, UK announced 25.3% renewable power share for April-June, and the US scheduled an auction for a 3.4-GW-plus offshore wind lease area off New Jersey.

Other top news from the week include Dong Energy’s plan for an IPO within 18 months, the start of commercial operations at a 117-MW wind park in Jordan, and the award of 20-year contracts to 116 MW of renewable power projects in New York.

100% RENEWABLE

The world could reach a renewables share of 100% by 2050 if it phases out fossil fuels and nuclear energy as fast as it is technically and economically possible, according to a report by Greenpeace and GWEC. The share of solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind energy can hit 20.2% and 32.1%, respectively.

The UK’s renewable energy industry can celebrate a small victory in that direction, having reached the record-high 25.3% renewables share in second-quarter power generation.

Sweden, meanwhile, wants to be one of the first fossil fuel-free countries worldwide and plans to bet on solar, wind, energy storage and smart grids. It has set aside some SEK 4.5 billion (USD 534m/EUR 479m) for climate-protection measures in its 2016 budget bill.

Thirteen developers have been allowed to participate, among which France’s EDF, Spain’s Iberdrola, RES America and Ireland’s Mainstream Renewable Power.

WIND IN JORDAN, WIND IN NY

Late last week it was announced that the 117-MW Tafila, or Tafileh, wind farm in southern Jordan has started commercial operation. The 38-turbine wind park is worth about USD 287 million and is so far the kingdom’s biggest.

In New York, RES America won a power off-take contract for its 100-MW Ball Hill wind farm under the state’s 10th Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) Main Tier solicitation. Several smaller biogas and hydro projects also made it to the winners’ list.
