THE FRIDAY NOTE Actis Mainstream plan 900 MW in Africa and more of the

Feb 20, 2015 – This week Actis and Mainstream Renewable announced a USD-1.9-billion renewables JV in Africa, Pattern Development and CEMEX said they plan 1 GW in Mexico and Vestas signed pacts for large Pakistani wind projects, while India got 266 GW of renewable energy commitments over the weekend.

UK private equity firm Actis and Ireland-based Mainstream Renewable Power are creating the joint venture to build up to 900 MW of wind and solar power capacity in Africa by 2018. Their plans involve South Africa, Egypt and Ghana, the partners said Tuesday.

On Thursday, US-based Pattern Development and Mexican company CEMEX Energia also unveiled joint capacity plans. Through a JV they want to build at least 1 GW of renewable energy plants in Mexico over the next five years.

SHANGHVI BUYING 23% IN SUZLON, FORM 450-MW WIND JV

Speaking of joint ventures we cannot miss Suzlon Energy’s (BOM:532667) plan to develop 450 MW of wind power capacity together with Indian billionaire Dilip Shanghvi and his family. The latter have also agreed to take a 23% stake in the Indian wind turbine maker in exchange for an USD 290 million (EUR 255m) equity investment.

Suzlon is also mulling the sale of a stake in local castings and forgings business SE Forge Ltd in a drive to reduce its substantial debt pile.

WERPO EYES 500 MW OF WAVE ENERGY CAPACITY IN GHANA

We return to Africa, and more specifically to Ghana, where Israeli firm WERPO (OTCMKTS:BBRD) has a plan to eventually deploy 500 MW of sea wave power capacity, an official told SeeNews Renewables on Monday. The wave power company has already entered into a partnership agreement with The Africa Center for Energy Policy (ACEP) to build a power station in Ghana based on WERPO technology.

UK CLEARS FOREWIND’S 2.4-GW WIND PROJECT OFF YORKSHIRE

On the offshore wind front one of the hottest news came from Europe. The UK government on Tuesday gave the go-ahead to Forewind’s 2,400-MW Dogger Bank Creyke Beck offshore wind project. It will have up to 400 wind turbines.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, Danish utility Dong Energy said it has selected MHI Vestas Offshore Wind as the preferred supplier of wind turbines for the 330-MW first phase of the Walney Extension in British waters. More specifically, it will use the V164-8.0MW turbine model, developed by Vestas.

VESTAS SIGNS 2 WIND MOUs IN PAKISTAN

Speaking of Vestas, the Danish wind turbine maker has entered into two separate memoranda of understanding (MOUs) in Pakistan for wind farm projects. Early this week, it was announced that Vestas Wind Systems will develop a 100-MW wind project in Pakistan’s Sindh province. The facility is planned to expand to as much as 300 MW at a later stage.

On Thursday the firm also agreed to work on projects in Punjab. Vestas has carried out a wind resource analysis there, which has shown that four large wind farms can be built in Pakistan’s most populous province, for a combined capacity of 800 MW to 1,000 MW.

HOT MARKET OF THE WEEK: INDIA

From Pakistan we go to India, where domestic and international companies have committed to install 266 GW of renewable energy capacity. At the three-day RE-Invest 2015 conference US company SunEdison Inc unveiled plans for 15.2 GW of wind and solar projects in India. US-based First Solar Inc also committed to 5 GW of projects.
