THE FRIDAY NOTE 1.5 GW of offshore wind wins in UK DK and more of the

February 27 – In the past week 1.5 GW of offshore wind projects won tenders in the UK and Denmark, SkyPower of Canada and Terra Solar of Bahrain discussed gigawatt-scale renewables plans for Egypt and FTI’s 2014 global turbine maker ranking showed that Vestas remains at the top.

One of the hottest topics for the week was the UK’s first CfD (Contracts For Differences) auction, in which over 2 GW of renewable energy projects won the right to sign 15-year power sale contracts. The list of winning schemes, presented on Thursday, includes ScottishPower Renewables’ East Anglia 1 offshore wind farm, which will get a contract for 714 MW of capacity, and the 448-MW Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind project by Ireland-based Mainstream Renewable Power.

Meanwhile in Denmark, Vattenfall AB won the concession to build and operate the 400-MW Horns Rev 3 offshore wind park. The Swedish state-owned utility said Friday it needs to get the approval from the Danish parliament and the EU before it could proceed with construction.

DONG’S ANHOLT OFFSHORE WIND FARM SHUTS DOWN DUE TO NEW CABLE FAULT

Speaking of offshore wind in Denmark we cannot miss the news that Dong Energy’s 400-MW Anholt wind farm will be unable to transmit power to the grid due to another subsea cable fault. This time the plant will be offline for at least three weeks.

GERMANY’S 1ST SOLAR TENDER STARTS

Back to the tenders topic, Germany’s pilot solar photovoltaic (PV) auction has now commenced. The Federal Network Agency will be accepting bids by April 15 for total capacity of 150 MW. The winners will be the ones that offer the lowest power sale rate.

MORE GLOBAL PLAYERS EYE EGYPT’S RENEWABLES MARKET

In Egypt, Bahrain-based Terra Sola Group has plans to invest as much as USD 3.5 billion (EUR 3.12bn) in solar PV projects, while Canadian solar firm SkyPower has expressed willingness to install 3,000 MW of renewable energy capacity over five years. The two have held meetings with Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab on Tuesday and on Monday, respectively.

FIRST SOLAR, SUNPOWER NEGOTIATE JOINT SOLAR YIELDCO

The last solar news for this week’s Friday Note involves two major sector players, which are planning to jointly create a publicly-traded yieldco to hold solar assets. US companies First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) and SunPower (NASDAQ:SPWR) are holding advanced talks on the move.

When presenting its financial results for 2014, First Solar said that the yieldco move would affect its results in the near-term but generate significant value for shareholders over the long-term.

EDF EN FORMS BRAZILIAN UNIT TO MANAGE 800 MW OF WIND

Back to the wind energy front, French green energy firm EDF Energies Nouvelles (EDF EN) said Wednesday it has acquired an 80% stake in an 800-MW project portfolio in Brazil. The first 70 MW will be installed by the end of 2017. A newly established local subsidiary, EDF EN do Brasil, will manage the parks together with German developer Sowitec, which has retained a 20% stake.

VESTAS KEEPS TOP SPOT IN FTI’S WIND TURBINE OEM RANKING FOR 2014

Last but not least this week comes FTI Consulting’s preliminary ranking of the global wind turbine original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Danish company Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) remained in lead for a second year running, followed by Germany’s Siemens AG (ETR:SIE) and China’s Xinjiang Goldwind (HKG:2208).
