January 12 – German photovoltaics (PV) maker SolarWorld (ETR:SWV) said on Thursday it will invest a double digit million Euro amount to equip its Freiberg solar wafer factory with diamond wire saws.
SolarWorld has made an order for the equipment to Swiss machinery maker Meyer Burger (SWX:MBTN). The upgrade of the plant will increase its output and production speed, and, at the same time, reduce costs and material losses, the Bonn-based company said.
The solar wafers made at the Freiberg plant, which SolarWorld says is the largest such facility in Europe, will be used for the production of solar cells at the company site in Arnstadt, Thuringia.
The factory in Freiberg, Saxony, was opened in 1994 and acquired by SolarWorld in 2000. It now operates as a completely integrated PV production site with the capacity to manufacture 750 MW of wafers, 330 MW of cells and 660 MW of modules, according to information on SolarWorld’s website.
