Solar project of 30 MW planned for Gaza

April 17 – The Palestinian Energy and Natural Resources Authority said Thursday it has signed an agreement for a project to provide the Gaza Strip with 30 MW of solar power capacity.
The move is designed to help tackle Gaza’s power crisis. Under the agreement, equipment for the project will be delivered within three months, while installation is due to be completed within a further six months.
The contract is with a US-based company owned by a Palestinian businessman, according to reports citing Ahmed Abul-Omrein, a spokesman for the authority.
The Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA) projected in January that 1,800 MW of solar projects will be tendered or awarded in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in 2015, compared to less than 300 MW awarded in 2014. The market expansion is helped by the decline in solar system prices and the rising cost of natural gas power, according to MESIA.
