Solar Frontier provides panels for K Line ship
February 11 – Solar Frontier’s solar panels have been installed on a new environmentally friendly transport ship of Japanese shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd (TYO:9107), or K Line.
The car-carrier was launched this week at a port in southern Japan and is the first of eight similar vessels that will be built under K Line’s Drive Green Project, the Tokyo-based solar manufacturer said in a statement.
In what is described as one of the largest solar energy systems on any ship in the world, the car-carrier features more than 900 of Solar Frontier’s copper, indium, selenium (CIS) solar panels. With a combined capacity of 150 kWp, the panels will power all LED lighting on the vehicle decks.
Solar Frontier, a unit of Showa Shell Sekiyu KK (TYO:5002), said its CIS modules were picked by K Line as they generate higher electricity yield than crystalline silicon solar panels in real-world conditions and offer endurance in hot and salt-mist environments.
