Solar Frontier equips Italian shopping centre with 1.4 MW of CIS modules

September 7 – Japanese firm Solar Frontier KK, part of energy company Showa Shell Sekiyu KK (TYO:5002), said Wednesday 1.4 MW of its copper indium diselenide (CIS) thin-film solar modules have been installed at the Il Centro shopping centre near Milan, Italy.
The company’s unit Solar Frontier Europe delivered 8,295 of 170-Wp modules for the scheme. ING srl installed them across the entire rooftop of the mall between October 2015 and January 2016.
The electricity generated by the rooftop solar array is enough to light the building and run the air conditioning system, while the excess is to be fed to the grid. All in all, the system covers some 50% of the daily consumption of the shopping center.
“The installation saves more than 800 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) each year and ensures that the shopping center is not dependent on rising electricity prices,” Solar Frontier Europe managing director, Wolfgang Lange, said.
The mega comercial mall, located in Arese, opened in April. Comprising approximately 200 shops, it is touted as the largest one in Italy and ranks among the biggest shopping centres in Europe.
