CHINA: Siemens has signed a deal with Mudanjiang Citong Drive and Electric Technology to manufacture generators for Siemens 2.5MW turbine.
Siemens recently upgraded its 2.3MW turbine to 2.5MW for the Asian market
The deal is for 550 2.5MW turbines in north-east China’s Heilongjiang province in the next three years. The first 40 generators will be supplied to Siemens before the end of this year.
The 550 generator deal is worth CNY 200 million ($ 35 million). The signing ceremony was witnessed by executives of leading Chinese wind farm developers China Power Investment Corporation, China Power International, Huadian Renewables and Datang Renewables.
Since 2008, Siemens has localised the purchase of wind turbine hulls, principal axis and gearboxes in China.
In 2011, Harbin Citong Research Institute, a leading Chinese wind turbine technology developer, beat four opponents, including Shanghai Electric, to develop and supply 2.5MW squirrel-cage wind turbine generators, 3MW direct-drive wind turbine stators and 4MW squirrel-cage wind turbine generators for Siemens.
Despite the slowdown in Chinese wind power sector, Siemens remains optimistic of further increase in the Chinese market. Siemens has set up two joint ventures with Shanghai Electric to tap the Chinese market.
It supplied 20 2.5MW turbines to an onshore wind farm in Guangrao, east China’s Shandong province in 2012, and 21 2.3MW offshore turbines to an inter-tidal wind project in east China’s Jiangsu province in 2010.
