SEIA hopes for approval of 500-MW renewables plan in Alabama

July 24 – The head of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) on Thursday urged regulators to clear Alabama Power’s plan to add up to 500 MW of new renewable power capacity to its portfolio in six years, saying that the move is a “no-brainer”.

“In addition to the vast environmental benefits, increasing a state’s solar energy capacity will create numerous jobs and stimulate the local economy,” said Rhone Resch, president and CEO of SEIA.

Alabama Power, part of US power group Southern Co (NYSE:SO), announced last week it had asked the Alabama Public Service Commission (PSC) to approve its 500-MW renewables programme. The company intends to pursue a number of projects of up to 80 MW each.

At present, the state of Alabama has just 2 MW of installed solar power capacity and is among the bottom 10 US states in the solar ranking. However, SEIA points out that Alabama has greater solar resources than states like New Jersey, Massachusetts and New York.
