Scotland’s solar capacity in 2015 rises to 179 MW
December 30 – Scotland’s installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity at the end of 2015 has increased by 28% from a year ago to a total 179 MW, updated figures by energy regulator Ofgem reveal.
When compared with 2010, there is a rise of 177 MW.
Commenting on the data today, WWF Scotland and the Solar Trade Association Scotland urged the Scottish government to encourage the roll-out of more solar power north of the border. John Forster of the Solar Trade Association Scotland praised the country’s new building regulations but noted that it is “critical we find a way to encourage the use of solar on existing buildings too”.
Currently, over 40,000 homes and 850 business premises in Scotland have solar arrays installed. The total installed solar capacity on homes this year reached 159 MW.
One utility-scale project is also nearing completion in Scotland. The first 5-MW phase of BWE Partnership’s New Mains of Guynd solar park should be up and running by the end of December, the Aberdeen-based company said early this month. The whole 9.5-MW park is due to be completed by June 2016.
