Queensland okays USD-283m solar project by Fotowatio
October 29 – The Queensland Government in Australia has given the green light to an AUD-400-million (USD 283.5m/EUR 258.6m) solar project by Spanish developer Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV).
The announcement was made on Thursday. The government approved the up to 150-MW Clare solar project in the Burdekin Shire after a thorough reassessment. The scheme will support the state’s goal of reaching 50% renewable energy in 2030.
According to estimates, energy demand in regional Queensland will rise to 95.93 GW/week in 2036 from 74.7 GW per week now. Upon completion, the photovoltaic (PV) power plant is expected to produce as much power as 65,000 homes need.
FRV expects to start construction on 2016 or 2017 and complete it in 12-18 months, according to information available on the project’s website.
A condition of approval was that the site will be rehabilitated “as far as practical” to its pre-development condition upon decommissioning of the solar panels.
