NRG MidAmerican top 2014 ranking of large solar plant owners
April 1 – US utilities NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) and MidAmerican Energy (OTCMKTS:MDPWK) are on top of Wiki-Solar’s 2014 ranking of the leading utility-scale solar plant owners, with roughly 729 MW of owned capacity each.
NRG Energy has positioned itself as the number one in this list as it had exactly 729 MW of utility-scale solar parks in operation at the end of 2014, Wiki-Solar said on Wednesday. It is closely followed by Warren Buffett’s MidAmerican, which had 728.8 MW and is expected to shortly add a further 585 MW once the Solar Star plant in California is completed. And while NRG has 12 large solar power stations, MidAmerican is above all others with just two assets — the 550-MW Topaz solar park in California and a portion of the 350-MW Agua Caliente facility that is actually co-owned with NRG.
Another US company, GE Energy, has occupied the third position with 503.8 MW, just a bit more than Hong Kong’s United Photovoltaics Group Ltd (HKG:0686), which had 502.1 MW.
Below is the list of the top 16 utility-scale solar plant owners as at the end of 2014.
Google, Lightsource and Southern Power are the new entrants in this ranking, Wiki-Solar’s founder Philip Wolfe points out.
