Nevada approves grandfathering for existing solar customers

September 16 – The regulatory authorities in Nevada today approved the grandfathering proposal of Nevada utility NV Energy and developer SolarCity, allowing existing solar rooftop owners in the state to keep their original net metering rates.
Just before Christmas 2015, the Nevada PUC approved, based on recommendations by NV Energy, a new scheme for net metering, lifting the utility service charge for small solar owners and reducing the credits paid to them for power sent to the grid.
At the end of July, NV Energy said it was seeking the PUC’s approval to grandfather for 20 years solar customers that joined the net metering scheme before December 31, 2015.
After nine months of regulatory and legal challenges Nevada’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC) finally decided to grandfather the 32,000 rooftop solar customers who applied to install rooftop solar before December 31, 2015. These include “thousands of Nevadans who applied to go solar but have not yet installed their systems, and now have the ability to install solar under the grandfathered net metering program”, SolarCity said in a statement on Friday.
The settlement, however, does not reverse the higher fees and charges on Nevadans who wish to go solar in the future.
