Mercom reiterates 9-GW-plus India solar installs forecast for 2017

January 3 – India has reached 9.6 GW of cumulative installed solar power capacity, including both large plants and rooftop installations, having deployed over 4 GW in 2016, Mercom Capital Group LLC said on Monday.
The sector consultancy said in its quarterly update on the Indian solar market it believes that about 3.7 GW of the total installed in 2016 are utility-scale plants and some 275 MW are rooftop projects.
Mercom reiterates its 2017 solar installs guidance of more than 9 GW. For comparison, in 2015 the country installed 2.3 GW. The consultancy, though, noted that there are still major concerns around transmission, evacuation, curtailment, timely payments and the outcome of the goods and services tax (GST).
Raj Prabhu, CEO and co-founder of Mercom, commented that solar projects development is facing certain setbacks because of incomplete infrastructure.
“In some cases, developers are incurring expenses to clean the land, build roads, and are waiting for power to be evacuated after commissioning. All of this is having a negative effect on project costs and profitability,” Prabhu said.
Mercom also mentioned that, as of November 2016, solar parks accounted for about 16.7% of the new power generation capacity added in India throughout the year.
