Masdar eyes wind solar power investments in Morocco – report

October 8 – Abu Dhabi-based renewables firm Masdar is currently in talks over taking part in Morocco’s forthcoming wind tender as well as other wind and solar energy investments, local daily Aujourd’hui le Maroc reports.
Masdar has already approached Spanish Acciona Energia, which is a pre-qualified bidder in the 850 MW wind energy tender managed by Moroccan electricity and water utility company ONEE.
ONEE has extended till October 30 the deadline for submitting commercial bids for the tender.
The 850 MW tender includes five projects — the 150 MW Tanger 2 in the northern part of the country, 300 MW at Tiskrad, Laayoune, 200 MW at Jbel Lahdid, Essaouira, 100 MW near Boujdour, and 100 MW at Midelt, some 400 km east of Casablanca.
Another business opportunity that Masdar is eyeing is solar power plant development at the Ouarzazate site.
Masdar is said to be negotiating with Spanish Grupo Gransolar over submitting a joint bid for 170 MW with Morocco’s agency for solar energy MASEN. The Abu Dhabi company is proposing to set up a 70%-owned joint venture to develop three solar power plants, 70 MW within the framework of Noor IV at Ouarzazate as well as 80 MW at Foum and another 20 MW at Boujdour, according to Aujourd’hui le Maroc.
Last but least, Masdar is also considering buying a share, at least 25%, in operational wind power plants or projects under construction.
Morocco’s national energy strategy is targeting to raise the share of renewable energy to 42% of the total installed capacity in the country by 2020, with solar, wind and hydro each contributing 14%. The African country has undertaken an integrated programme to increase its wind and solar power capacities to 2 GW each by 2020.
