October 13 – NEC Energy Solutions (NEC ES), a subsidiary of Japan’s NEC Corp (TYO:6701), has been selected to supply a 2 MW/3.9 MWh grid energy storage system to the Sterling Municipal Light Department (SMLD), a public power utility in the town of Sterling, Massachusetts.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held on Wednesday, NEC ES said.
When completed in December 2016, according to the announcement, it will be the largest battery-based energy storage system in New England. The installation will improve grid resiliency against weather-related power outages, provide for increased usage of clean energy and deliver transmission capacity charge savings from reducing peak demand.
NEC ES is providing its GSS energy storage system, including a container with 3.9 MWh of lithium ion batteries, a 2-MW power conversion system and proprietary controls software. It will also provide service and maintenance packages for the installation.
The project was partly funded by a USD-1.46-million (EUR 1.32m) grant from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER).
“Energy storage technologies, especially when paired with renewable energy, have the potential to be a game changer for Massachusetts, helping to lower the cost of energy to ratepayers while reducing emissions,” said DOER commissioner Judith Judson.
According to the announcement, SMLD is currently ranked seventh in the US in installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity per capita.
