Japan’s Kaneka boosts efficiency of c-Si cells to 25.1%

October 28 – Japanese chemical company Kaneka Corp (TYO:4118) said Friday it has reached a conversion efficiency of 25.1% for its double-sided electrode type heterojunction crystalline silicon photovoltaic (PV) cells.

The result has been measured by Germany-based Fraunhofer ISE, according to the press release. Kaneka plans to soon launch pilot production lines for these cells, the first of which are expected to hit the market in fiscal 2015.

The high cell efficiency was achieved through the joint effort of Kaneka and Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The latter will unveil the technical specifications of the 5×5-inch cell today, at the Meeting to Report Results on New Energy in Fiscal 2015.

Kaneka’s product is the first cell using a double-sided electrode technology to top 25% efficiency, the manufacturer noted. Earlier this year, Kaneka announced a 24.52% efficiency for 6×6-inch large-area heterojunction c-Si cells.
