Intel unveils big solar carport at California campus
February 18 – US chipmaker Intel Corp (NASDAQ:INTC) this week unveiled in its own estimate the largest private solar carport in the US at its campus in Folsom, California.
The carport is large enough to park almost 3,000 cars, Todd Brady, Intel global environmental director, said in a blog post on the company’s website.
At peak capacity the solar array will generate enough power to meet more than 50% of the campus’ energy needs, equivalent to meeting the power demand of almost 1,000 homes.
The new installation brings the total on-site solar energy capacity at the campus to 8.7 MW. The Sacramento Bee reported that the solar carport has a capacity of 6.5 MW and was installed by SolarCity, which has installed 1.2 MW and 1 MW of panels at the site in previous phases.
According to Intel, the installation is the largest corporate solar carport in the US as recognised by the Solar Energy Industry Association. The company said the system was part of its commitment to environmental sustainability.
