India to install 160 MW of renewables at ports by 2017
August 12 – India’s Ministry of Shipping plans to deploy more than 160 MW of renewable energy capacity at 16 major ports across the country by 2017, it announced in a statement on Thursday.
The ministry is in the process of installing 90.64 MW of solar systems at 12 ports and 70 MW of wind turbines at a further four ports. The total cost for this project is estimated at INR 4.08 billion (USD 61m/EUR 55m). The ports will use own resources to finance the installations.
Solar arrays with a combined capacity of 6.94 MW have already been completed and almost all of that capacity is located at the Vishakhapatnam port. Other ports with completed solar installations include Kolkata Port, New Manglore Port, VO Chidambaranar Port and Mumbai Port.
