India may file WTO case against US solar policies – report

March 25 – India will not only appeal the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) ruling on the country’s local content requirements for solar power equipment, but will also file a case against the US, according to a minister.
A month ago, the WTO ruled that India discriminated against US solar cells and modules because of a requirement for solar project developers to use locally-made equipment. The Asian nation will certainly appeal the decision and it is also looking for an alternative mechanism to protect its manufacturers, the power, coal and renewables minister Piyush Goyal said today as cited by the Hindu BusinessLine.
Goyal is currently conducting a research into at least nine US states that have similar programmes protecting local solar product makers. After he completes his research, India will file a case against the US, he said as quoted by the newspaper.
Previously, the minister had convinced local solar manufacturers not to seek anti-dumping duties against US exporters. Now, he fears that they may again go in that direction, which, he warned, could raise the cost of solar power and force the government to abandon its ambitious expansion programme.
