Financing of USD 5.6m agreed for Jordan mosques to go solar – report
April 8 – Jordan is expected to have about 2,000 mosques powered by solar panels in two years, Hayel Daoud, Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs was cited as saying Thursday after the signing of a JOD-4-million (USD 5.6m/EUR 4.9m) financing agreement.
The deal was signed with the Jordan Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund (JREEEF) and the money will be used to help increase funding provided to mosques to adopt renewables to 50% from 20%, The Jordan Times reported.
The initiative will see the installation of 4 MW of solar panels.
At the moment 400 mosques in the country use solar systems. Jordan has around a total of around 6,300 mosques, but according to the minister renewable installations are needed for only 2,000 of them because their bills for electricity are too high.
