Exelon Completes Wind Farm in Michigan

Exelon Corporation has announced that its power plant operations subsidiary Exelon Power has brought a wind farm online in Michigan.

The Michigan Wind 2 Project, which was developed and constructed by Exelon Power’s wind division Exelon Wind, is made up of 50 wind turbines that have a combined generation capacity of 90 MW.

Michigan Wind 2 nearly doubles Exelon Wind’s total generation capacity in the Wolverine state, making the company the state’s largest wind operator. Although Exelon boasts a 753 MW wind power portfolio that spans eight states, Michigan Wind 2 represents the first commercial wind project that it has developed.

In fact, even though Exelon Generation has been purchasing wind power since 2001 — currently it buys 350 MW of wind power through long term power purchase agreements with wind farms in Illinois, Pennsylvania and West Virginia — in terms of owning wind power, Exelon is a relative newcomer. The company jumped into the market in 2010 when it acquired John Deere Renewables which came with 36 wind projects.

Exelon Wind is not wasting anytime in growing its development wing. The company intends to break ground on a second wind power project it is developing in Michigan within the next couple of months. Located in Pigeon, Mich., Harvest II Wind Project will employ 33 Vestas wind turbines that will generate up to 59 MW of renewable energy. The energy generated at both Harvest II and Michigan 2 will be sold to Consumers Energy under long term power purchase agreements (PPA).

These PPAs will help Consumers Energy meets the state mandated Renewable Energy Standard. Established in 2008 the Clean, Renewable and Efficient Energy Act requires electric providers to source 10% of their supply portfolio from renewable sources by 2015.
