Enel switches on 66-MW solar park in S Africa
June 8 – Italian energy company Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) said on Tuesday it has hooked to the grid the 66-MW Tom Burke solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in South Africa’s Limpopo province.
The particular facility is capable of producing up to 122 GWh of electricity annually, which is the equivalent to the annual consumption needs of around 38,000 local homes. It is selling its output to utility Eskom under a 20-year contract.
Enel now has nearly 160 MW of installed capacity in South Africa, including the recently-completed 82.5-MW Paleisheuwel PV park in the Western Cape province and the 10-MW Upington facility in the Northern Cape province.
“Furthermore, we have more than a gigawatt either recently awarded or already under construction, leveraging on the huge potential offered by this resource-rich country,” said Lamberto Dai Pra’, Enel’s country manager in South Africa.
