Duke Green Charge to market batteries with commercial solar projects
December 8 – The renewables arm of US utility Duke Energy Corp (NYSE:DUK) said on Tuesday it has teamed up with Green Charge Networks to offer energy storage systems to commercial solar customers.
The new alliance envisages Green Charge Networks working together with fellow California-based business REC Solar, majority-owned by Duke Energy Renewables, to market lithium-ion batteries with REC’s solar projects. The partnership will initially focus on the southern California and Hawaiian markets.
Green Charge’s batteries’ purpose will be to draw electricity from REC’s solar arrays and the grid during off-peak hours and release it during peak hours, when electricity is more costly, Duke explained in its statement.
Duke acquire a controlling stake in REC Solar earlier in 2015. Last month, the firm unveiled the interconnection of a 12-MW photovoltaic array in Hawaii for the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC).
