DOI okays 287-MW version of Soda Mountain solar farm in California

April 6 – The Interior Department (DOI) has given the green light last week to the revised 287-MW Soda Mountain Solar Project in the Mojave Desert, California, it said Tuesday.

An array of panels north of Interstate 15 has been eliminated from the original 358-MW proposal by Bechtel due to environmental and visual impact concerns. The approved scheme preserves scenic vistas, reduces potential impacts to wildlife in the area and protects groundwater, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) said.

The solar farm will be built on 1,767 acres of BLM-managed lands southwest of Baker, California. It is expected to be able to produce power for over 86,000 US homes.

The DOI has approved 58 utility-scale renewable energy projects on public lands since 2009, which together represent near 15.5 GW of capacity.
