April 17 – Chilean mining company Sierra Gorda SCM mulls over developing a solar project to secure part of its energy supply, senior energy superintendent Heinz Bush said at a recent meeting, quoted by local energy news site Revista Electricidad.
According to estimates, 400 ha (988 acres) allow for installation of 200 MW, which could be developed near the Sierra Gorda copper-gold mine.
The company needs an average 140 MW for the first phase of its operations, 270 MW for the expansion phase and an additional 20 MW for its oxide ore plant. It has contracted 251 MW for a 21-year period from AES Gener’s Cochrane thermal plant that will be operational in June 2016. With the solar system, Sierra Gorda may redirect part of the Cochrane energy to spot sales and reduce its exposure to the energy market.
