Chile expects 2 GW of renewables from Atacama land contracts
August 31 – The Chilean government expects the development of 1,965 MW of renewable energy projects on state-owned land leased to investors in the Atacama region, minister of national assets Victor Osorio said on Sunday.
The ministry is evaluating 83 requests for land concessions for renewable power generation in this region, while 34 contracts have been approved since the current government took office in 2014. In the first eight months of 2015, the administration collected CLP 1.01 billion (USD 1.5m/EUR 1.3m) in rents alone in Atacama, 65% of which was channeled to local development.
On Friday, Osorio visited the 141-MW Luz del Norte photovoltaic project built by First Solar Inc thanks to a 30-year land deal with the state. Among the other solar plants in the region are Llano de Llampos of 100 MW, San Andres of 51 MW and Javiera and Salvador, each of 70 MW.
