August 20 – Chile’s environmental authorities in Atacama region on Tuesday published a project for the construction of a 475-MW photovoltaic (PV) plant by Parque Solar Fotovoltaico Luz del Oro SpA, owned by First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR).
The plant will consist of over 4.17 million First Solar modules south of Diego de Almagro city and will produce clean energy for the country’s main grid. The project will be developed between 2017 and 2020 with nearly USD 950 million (EUR 848.7m), though its operation could start at the end of 2017.
Also in Atacama, First Solar is building its 141-MW Luz del Norte plant, scheduled for completion by the end of 2015.
Chile has set a 20% target for renewable energy by 2025. In the present year, solar PV plants are expected to replace wind power as the leading renewable source in terms of installed capacity.
