September 17 – Chile’s environmental committee for O’Higgins region has approved the first local photovoltaic park, designed to supply up to 9 MW into the country’s central grid SIC, the energy ministry said Wednesday.
The project, owned by Berlino Solar SpA, comprises 42,000 modules with a total installed capacity of 10.5 MWp, connected to the distribution network in Marchigue municipality. The plant will produce 16.4 GWh a year, equivalent to the consumption of 9,000 homes.
The company plans to build the park over a six-month period by investing some USD 20 million (EUR 17.7m).
Chile wants to increase the share of renewable energy to 20% by 2025 from 10% at present. The photovoltaic projects in construction have multiplied to 1,100 MW since early 2014, with construction lasting eight to 12 months and environmental assessment of nearly a year, regional energy secretary Jaime Smith said.
