Temperatures in my just finished upstairs Cape Cod were overwhelming. Temperatures behind the knee walls in the attic section would reach close to 140 degrees. Plenty of insulation, soffit and ridge vents were simply not enough to cool the attic under the massive roof on my home. The brand new central A/C unit upstairs ran non-stop. I was a little apprehensive about putting a fan on the roof of my home after reading reviews about the noise they make and how these fans won’t work well with a ridge vent close by. For my particular situation this fan works very well. The installation was suprisingly easy and took about two hours. I was working on a 9/12 pitch roof. My roof trusses are on 16 inch centers, so I installed extra 2×6 horizontal blocking top and bottom of the hole. Then screwed the plywood around the hole into the blocking. I believe this will minimize the noise and vibration of these fans by securing the plywood supporting the fan, especially if your trusses are on 24 inch centers.

The next day the temps. in my attic space never went over 110 degrees and it was hotter than the days before! The fan is probably no louder than listening to an A/C running. Outside you can definitely hear the sound of rushing air from the fan, but as long as it’s cooling my attic I’m not bothered by it. Next job will be installing radiant barrier. Should have done that before finishing the attic.

This review is from: Broan 356BR1600 CFM Roof Mount Powered Attic Ventilator, Brown PVC Dome (Tools & Home Improvement)

My old roof vent went out durring the worst heat wave in Missouri in a long time. The new Broan 356BR1600 is very quiet and also matches the roofing color.
